What do you want people to know about your small business?

“Protech Fence was founded by our parents, who helped instill an entrepreneurial mindset in me and my brothers at a young age. We were helping them install fences at the age of 14.”

“When my brothers and I decided to purchase the business from our parents, we brought different strengths in entrepreneurship, strategy and people management. We’re proud that together, we scaled Protech Fence into one of southeastern Idaho’s leading fencing providers, serving residential, commercial, agricultural, and government clients.”

“We have eight specialized crews that allow us to deliver rapid, high-quality service, including 24-hour emergency fencing. Our in-house manufacturing team also supplies local contractors.”

How did you grow your small business while staying true to the core values created by your parents?  

“Our parents helped us understand how to create a healthy culture that allows families to make careers where they like to work. We want our employees to enjoy the journey with us.”

“In addition to dozens of full-time employees, we also hire a handful of high school students each summer and strive to teach them valuable work skills and instill a strong work ethic. Many of these young employees return in subsequent years and we’re proud that parents often look to our company for their child’s first job because of the culture we’ve created.”

“Digging holes isn’t always fun, so we know we’re creating a healthy work environment when people seek us out and want to work with us.”

How did an SBA loan help your small business?

“Our company benefited from an SBA working capital and equipment loan, which supported operational expansion and increased production capacity.”

“We have an in-house manufacturing shop that produces all fencing materials. This vertical integration ensures quality, maintains inventory and even supplies other contractors.”

What guidance do you have for other small business owners?

“Be bold in responding to adversity! A few years ago, inflation drove material and labor costs sharply higher, compressing margins and causing many of our industry peers to go out of business or significantly downsize.”

“Instead of cutting back, we decided to grow through the downturn by diversifying services beyond residential fencing into commercial and temporary fencing, increasing business volume and leveraging our size for more cost-effective supplier purchasing agreements.”

“These decisions helped stabilize our profits and positioned us to recover, ultimately enabling us to retain jobs, expand our footprint and grow revenue.”
