FIT TO RECOVER
Following his own experience recovering from an addiction, Ian Acker had a strong desire to help others. He realized that creating a healthier lifestyle was a critical component to his own recovery, so he decided to create a place with a holistic focus for people during recovery. The result is Fit To Recover in Salt Lake City, now serving around 300 members and clients per week.
Fit To Recover is a community center offering a safe place for people in recovery to connect through exercise, creative endeavors, nutrition and service opportunities. The facility includes a gym, a climbing wall, art studios, community garden, meeting rooms and play room. It also offers creative writing and paint nights.
A team of volunteers and registered dieticians from the University of Utah assist those in the Fit To Recovery program to learn how to have better nutrition. Acker says this is a critical stepping stone to recovery. Offering service opportunities helps people look outside themselves, introduces them back into the community and creates connections.
In just two years, Acker’s work at Fit To Recover has touched enough lives that in 2016, he received the SCORE National Community Impact Award.
