A scoop of cold ice cream on a hot summer’s day is one of life’s greatest little delights. Even more so when that scoop (or two) is among the best the Mountain West can offer. When it comes to ice cream, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming have plenty of homemade, mouthwatering, original flavors to offer. This summer, seek out one of these five ice cream joints known for their amazing artisan ice cream.

Moo’s Gourmet Ice Cream

There are plenty of flavors to choose from at Moo’s Gourmet Ice Cream in Jackson, Wyoming, a local favorite since 1991. No matter what appeals to your palate, you should at least sample the Wild Huckleberry ice cream. This berry-licious flavor was singled out by Food Network in 2013 as the best dessert in the state of Wyoming. In the summertime, the store sells around 20 gallons of Wild Huckleberry ice cream daily.

Moo’s boasts 160 flavors in regular rotation. In the winter, it sells 16 flavors at a time; in the summer, that number goes up to 24. All ice cream is made with organic cream and all-natural ingredients.

Rockwell Ice Cream

Good things come to those who wait at Rockwell Ice Cream in downtown Provo, Utah. And wait you likely will — first for a parking spot, then in the serpentine line that often snakes out the door, and lastly while you try to decide which flavor to choose (that will be no one’s fault but your own). But none of those things will bother you after the first lick of the delightfully tasty ice cream.

Flavors change regularly and are highly inventive, such as Vanilla with Cherry Wood Balsamic Vinegar and Lemon Olive Oil Swirl, or dairy-free Prickly Pear Sorbet. Customer favorites include Honey Comb, made with vanilla ice cream and honey comb candy chunks, and Muddy Buddy, with milk chocolate ice cream and peanut butter swirled with Chex muddy buddy pieces. If you’re feeling particularly indulgent, pile your scoop into a waffle cone or sandwich it between two homemade cookies or order an unforgettable sundae.

Goody’s Soda Fountain

The quaint setting of Goody’s Soda Fountain in a Victorian home in Boise’s historic Hyde Park neighborhood can’t logically make the ice cream taste better, but it certainly adds to the experience. In business for 21 years, Goody’s is known for its handmade ice cream served from old-time soda fountain equipment that fits 13 flavors at a time. Oreo Cookie is an always-available favorite, made with oversized chunks of Oreos. Then there’s Toasted Coconut, which combines toasted coconut cream ice cream with hand-toasted coconut shavings. The latter has a cult following, says Megan Zottarelli, assistant manager. “Every time we make that we have a list of about 400 people to email,” she says. “In the summertime we run out within days.”

Hatch Family Chocolates

It makes sense that a place known for its scrumptious chocolates could also churn out amazing ice cream. Hatch Family Chocolates has been selling small-batch ice cream for almost six years. There are 16 flavors available daily, give or take, rotated among 20-30 overall. Salted Caramel is always a best-seller, says Stephen Hatch, one of the owners, along with Crimson Chip, a cherry chocolate-chip ice cream. In addition to classics like Rocky Road, made with homemade marshmallow crème, Hatch’s sells unexpected flavors seasonally such as Rose Water and Banana Avocado.

Valter’s Osteria

The gelato at Valter’s is reputed to be better than Italy’s. Even if you’re stuffed after a delicious meal at this Salt Lake City restaurant, find room for this refreshing treat — made in-house, every day, says owner Valter Nassi. The most popular flavor is the Lemon and Lemon, which starts with lemon gelato and is topped tableside with salt, fresh lemon and Utah honey. Or try the new Passionfruit, served with a fresh squeeze of orange juice, salt, honey, a drizzle of Grand Marnier orange liqueur and a homemade chocolate.
