Her baklava is handmade with 45 layers of phyllo dough, spices and honey to give it just the right amount of sweetness. In addition to the traditional walnut baklava, Magalde created other flavors such as chocolate almond, apple pecan, rhubarb walnut, peach and, for Christmas, spiced pear. Her recipe at Sheer Ambrosia is so authentic that in 2010, she became the first person without Greek ancestry to provide baklava for the Salt Lake City Greek Festival.
On her website customers can place orders for 10 flavors of baklava including traditional walnut, southern pecan and chocolate almond. The bakery also has 10 flavors of biscotti, including almond, hazelnut chocolate, lemon poppy seed and a gluten-free almond. At certain times of the year, Magalde bakes a variety of Greek cookies. She also offers a line of gourmet hot chocolates and teas that complement her baklava and biscotti. All her products can be purchased online and shipped worldwide.
Baklava is elegant and beautiful, according to Magalde, and makes an impressive gift item or adds flair to a dinner party or special event. She packages the treats in her signature blue and chocolate-brown pinstriped packaging. Baklava lovers can also find Sheer Ambrosia’s products in several Harmons grocery stores, Crown Burgers and Café Med.

When Rita Magalde started her bakery business nine years ago, she wanted to offer something original with an international flair. Passionate about baking and traveling, she worked for a Greek family through high school and college and became especially close to the yiayia, or grandmother. Under her tutelage, Magalde learned to make baklava, the specialty she offers at Sheer Ambrosia, her Sandy bakery.
