Speaking on Business: ONE Refugee
The ONE Refugee program provides a holistic scholarship for students who come from a refugee background.
This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
The ONE Refugee program provides a holistic scholarship for students who come from a refugee background. It’s set up to remove barriers to higher education for refugee students by providing financial assistance for students attending college for the first time. Scholarship recipients are evaluated to determine what needs they have to facilitate their learning, and funds cover tuition, books, a laptop or other needs, like eyeglasses or mental health, especially if the student is in crisis.
As a refugee resettlement community, Utah welcomes around 1,200 refugees each year from all over the world who come here looking for a better life, with many fleeing dangerous and sometimes life-threatening situations in their own country. Raymon Burton has seen the need that comes from those who are resettled, which is why he serves as an Education Director at ONE Refugee.
The ONE Refugee program was created in 2014 and has been steadily growing with 6 employees. They’re serving approximately 200 students every year and have helped 425 students so far, with over 150 graduates. Backed by education, these students are moving forward professionally working at Google, Exxon Mobile, OC Tanner, Intermountain Healthcare and Zions Bank, not to mention buying their own homes.
Through April 30, this remarkable program is taking applications. For refuges to apply, visit www.onerefugee.org.
