As an Italian immigrant to the United States, Ernest Mariani needed a livelihood. So, after working as a coal miner, he started his small Italian grocery store which incorporated as a wholesale foods company known as Ernest F. Mariani Company in 1920. Today, his small business has grown into a distributor of supplies and equipment for the food and beverage industry with 32 employees and operating in three states.
President and COO Wil Fiedler says their success with the Ernest F. Mariani Company is diversification. While the company started importing olive oils and Italian foods, as it grew, they strategically added new lines to keep the business competitive. Today, Ernest F. Mariani Company supplies fountain dispensers, sweeteners and ice makers, like frozen slurpee machines, sold into the convenience store business, which experienced record in-store sales of $655 billion in 2018 for the 16th year in a row. They’ve also entered distribution of bulk and non-hazardous chemicals while supplying valves, heat exchangers and sanitary stainless-steel pumps for food processing.
With such a diverse product line, Wil says the Ernest F. Mariani company uses rail and other transportation services to bring in bulk products that are prepared and transferred to trucks before being delivered to customers. Next year Ernest F. Mariani Company will celebrate their 100th anniversary.
