Speaking on Business: Erkelens and Olson
Erkelens and Olson is a professional auction and appraisal company that literally sells everything.
This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
By watching Rob Olson call an auction, you know it’s an art form. After 45 years and three generations of auctioneers in his family, you could say he’s figured it out, especially with his family involved. His business, Erkelens and Olson has grown so much they moved into a 32,000 square foot facility at 3365 West 500 South in Salt Lake City where they display upcoming auction items and host auctions.
Erkelens and Olson is a professional auction and appraisal company that literally sells everything from a private art collection to a pair of shoes. One of the biggest areas of growth for Erkelens and Olson is auctioning off brand new freight; in fact, the team auctions off between 12 to 16 semi-trailers worth of freight per week that includes clothing, bedding, health and beauty products, carpets and more. If there’s a chance it can sell, they’ll auction it off. The workload for Erkelens and Olson includes a mix of in-house auctions, auctions for U.S. Bankruptcy Court and work for non-profit organizations.
Rob is so well-known in this industry, he taught at the Missouri Auction School, which has been coined as the Harvard of Auction Schools. He learned the business from his dad, Tom, and is now passing Erkelens and Olson on to his sons.
