Speaking on Business: First Step House
First Step House is leading the charge to help people struggling with behavioral health disorders and substance abuse.
This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
As human beings one of our most basic needs is to belong, to be part of a community, which gives a sense of purpose and inclusion. When you’re in recovery from addiction or mental health challenges, your community becomes a lifeline. And that’s what First Step House in Salt Lake City is offering.
First Step House is leading the charge to help people struggling with behavioral health disorders and substance abuse. Their services include evidence-based therapies, residential or outpatient treatment, long-term recovery management, transitional housing and case management. Executive Director Shawn McMillen says the team, which includes 105 employees, is creating a supportive environment to enable long-term recovery. This is important work, helping address Utah’s well-known struggle with opiate addiction.
It wasn’t Shawn’s plan to go into this line of work. He was invited to work in a treatment program at the U of U during college. Instead, he found a connection in assisting others and kept receiving more assignments because he was so good at what he did. And his temporary job turned into his full-time profession. He became the executive director of First Step House in 2005.
Under Shawn’s leadership, treatment capacity at First Step House has grown by 75 percent and transitional housing capacity has increased 200 percent.
