Right now one of the biggest concerns facing our country is our mental health. Anxiety and depression and are at an all-time high, affecting so many, especially our kids. The team at SafeUT is working to create an anonymous and safe way to connect with kids.

SafeUT is a crisis chat and school safety tip line, built into an app. Once the app is installed, you receive instant access to a 24-hour crisis line where you can talk with a licensed clinical social worker. All therapists are trained in crisis intervention so they can offer assistance. The app connects students with their school, so they can anonymously report concerns like bullying, self-harm or weapons. The tip is sent to SafeUT and school administrators.

Juliana Briscoe, director of marketing and outreach for SafeUT, says the idea for SafeUT came from the 2015 Utah Legislative session and the app rolled out in 2016. It’s having impact because in the 2017-2018 academic school year, they had nearly 72,000 unique chats and tips, and as of May this year, SafeUT is in 85 percent of all K-12 schools statewide.

With teen suicides in Utah at an all-time high, SafeUT is a resource that needs to be installed on your phone. Find out how to download the app at www.safeut.med.edu.
