After operating and selling a successful Subway franchise with multiple stores, Gary and Colleen Worthington still felt the business bug biting, so they came up with a new concept … a bakery restaurant with a drive thru. People told them repeatedly it would never work, but the idea took off, and today, Kneaders has 59 stores in 8 states including two in Idaho, and is celebrating 20 years in business. All but two stores have a drive thru, which accounts for a significant portion of business.
Kneaders is a bakery that offers soups, salads and sandwiches, with bread made fresh on-site daily. Plus, they have a selection of baked goods. What they’re most known for are their world-class hearth breads, like focaccia and Ciabatta that they use to make delicious sandwiches, including customer favorite turkey bacon avocado. And for breakfast, the chunky cinnamon French toast is a top-seller.
In celebration of their 20th anniversary, they ran a contest to create new baked goods. Every other month this year, they’ll offer a new flavor of open-faced eclairs, and the first is strawberries and cream. They’re also releasing a cookbook in May with favorite recipes no longer used in store. They believe in community support and have donated over 1 million loaves of bread to those in need.
