Speaking on Business: Soroptimist International of Utah
Soroptimist International of Utah is focused on supporting women, with focus on education as the most effective path to self-sufficiency.
This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
A recent study published in Brides.com found that women are the primary breadwinners in 40 percent of households in the U.S., which includes single moms providing for their children. So, organizations like Soroptimist International are motivated to encourage women, offering access to education as the most effective path to self-sufficiency. This volunteer organization with over 80,000 Soroptimists in 130 countries is working to transform the lives of women and girls by supporting community-based and global projects.
Soroptimist International of Utah has been around since 1927, as one of the earliest adopters. One of the major initiatives for the Beehive State is the Dream It Be It Program for at-risk high school girls. It’s deigned to teach life skills to succeed and grow, like learning to budget and use money wisely, with an emphasis on education. And coming up this week is the annual Breakfast with Santa for those applying for the Live Your Dream awards, which are educational grants for women.
For Soroptimist International of Utah and Soroptimist International of Latinas, Rita Offret, governor of the Salt Lake Region, says their research has shown that 84 percent of women who receive the grants go back to school and the majority say it increased their self-esteem.
