Speaking on Business: Salt Lake Community College
Salt Lake Community College is one of Utah's largest suppliers of workforce development programs.
This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
After 25 years at Salt Lake Community College, Dr. Deneece Huftalin has seen many changes and is now directing them as the president of this Utah higher education institution. Salt Lake Community College remains one of Utah’s largest suppliers of workforce development programs with 10 sites and 60,000 full and part-time students. This is literally thousands of people the college is helping prepare for life and the workforce.
One of the most impressive additions at Salt Lake Community College is the opening of the West Point Center, coming up this fall, which is taking career and technical education to the next level. They’re opening a brand new 120,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art space in the hub of the aerospace industry at West Point, and major players like Boeing, HEXL and Kenworth have all been involved with its development, contributing knowledge, equipment and financial resources.
Dr. Huftalin, president of Salt Lake Community College, says these technical professions are always in need of more team members. For example, diesel mechanics and welders are in such high demand, they’re hired sight unseen. And once you get students to view the space where they’ll be working, they get excited at the highly technical nature of this important work, with training, and how well they’ll be paid.
