Tony Smith was a child when his family moved to the Uintah Basin and his dad, Willie Smith, started several businesses, including Basin Swabbing. As he worked alongside Willie, Tony learned to value hard work, be frugal and support the industry that is a driving force of the economy in the area. Six years ago, Tony bought Basin Swabbing and now operates it in partnership with his wife, Kristi.

Basin Swabbing, located in Roosevelt, services rigs in the Uintah Basin. They handle maintenance for oil and gas rigs, including downhole completion and workover services, with a team of 13 employees trained to do this important work. This industry has impact, since oil and gas production in the Uintah Basin contribute to Utah’s low natural gas utility rates and the ability to export about 30 percent of the energy we produce.

Safety is a critical focus at Basin Swabbing, so before they start each day, individual crews for each rig have a safety meeting to discuss tasks and what risks are present. Employees also receive the required OSHA training and additional safety training on a regular basis at the local tech college.

What drives business at Basin Swabbing is their reputation, serving generational customers who appreciate the “family” work ethic being passed down.

The Speaking on Business program is now in its twentieth year.

For Zions Bank, I’m Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
