At Barbarian Brewing, their brewing facility in Garden City, owners James Long and Bre Hovley have 15 beers on tap. These are their original brews they’ve spent the last four years perfecting. In just two years of opening, Barbarian Brewing has become popular enough to open a second taproom in downtown Boise.
As a five-barrel brew system, their specialty is on sour and barrel-aged creations. It takes planning to create their brews because they sit in barrels anywhere from three months to two years to get the unique flavor profiles. Their most popular at Barbarian Brewing is Beta Wolf 2.0, a sour IPA brewed with mango and passionfruit. There’s also the Folkvang, a tart German beer made with strawberries, cardamom and rosewater and a harvest ale for fall, flavored with butternut squash and spices.
Starting their own brewery was something Bre and James talked about for years. She waited tables during and after college while James was an avid home brewer who enjoyed it so much, he went to brewing school. With her business degree, Bre wrote the business plan for Barbarian Brewing and now loves seeing their operation grow, with 8 employees between both locations.
