It will take “all hands on deck” to figure out the pressing issues we face with clean air. Joel Ewell of Idle Free Heat is a smart millennial who is addressing this critical problem.

The Idle Free Heat product Joel invented has the ability to harness the heat coming from your engine and continue to deliver warm air in your vehicle for up to an hour, idle free. His product is so genius he won $22,000 in the Clean Air Competition to continue developing his company.

The apparatus activates the fan in the car and uses heat from the coolant to blow warm air without idling. When you have it installed, they place a small button on your dashboard, and you’re ready to go. Joel collaborated with his wife, Jessica, and daughters, Kaleigh and Lulu, to come up with the business name and organize a pilot program with a school district’s bus fleet. Joel discovered that using Idle Free Heat will reduce carbon monoxide from the diesel and save approximately $40,000 a year in fuel cost.

Joel understands Idle Free Heat needs to be available for all of us since almost 40 percent of our dirty air is caused by our cars; however, he has a laser focus on fleets to have a bigger impact.
