By many measures the economy is doing great. The US is currently in the longest economic expansion on record, employers have added jobs for 105 consecutive months, and the unemployment rate is near 50-year lows. However, despite these strong fundamentals, Fed officials are still widely expected to cut interest rates at their late-July meeting. Why would the Fed cut rates – typically a sign of economic weakness – when the economy appears to be doing so well?
