The ongoing trade war with China is making the Federal Reserve’s job difficult. Despite a solid
labor market, uncertainty over trade has hit the U.S. economy as businesses have cut back on
investment and exports have fallen. Additionally, the U.S. manufacturing sector, which was
once seen as a beneficiary of the trade war, has seen a sharp slowdown in employment growth.
In China, the U.S. tariffs have forced companies to move production off the mainland and into
nearby Asian markets, which has slowed China’s already-weak economy to the lowest level in
27 years.
