Volatility has returned to equity and bond markets in October. After a late-summer rally, the Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced the third-largest point decline in history on October 10th, and the yield on the 10-year bond rose above 3 percent. Recent uncertainty in the markets comes on the heels of a strong September employment report, in which the U.S. added 134,000 jobs and the unemployment rate fell to a 49-year low of 3.7 percent. The Federal Reserve also increased the federal funds rate a quarter-point, to a target range of 2.0 – 2.25 percent, at its late-September meeting.
