Speaking on Business: Wasatch Clinical Research

Creating and Testing New Medications

Chris Redgrave Apr 30, 2018

When Karen George was at one of the lowest points in her life as a single mom with five kids to support, she resolved to turn her life around. She went back to school for a nursing degree and discovered she had a passion for research.

She was so inspired she started Wasatch Clinical Research — a company that works with major international biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to create new medications. The company contracts with 60 local physicians to find patients who aren’t physically responding to their treatments and invites them to participate in clinical studies testing new treatments. The medications are for ailments from migraines to dementia to chronic pain.

George has seen patients with chronic illnesses respond to new medications and experience a significant improvement in their quality of life. She says it’s a win-win for Wasatch Clinical Research and the patients involved. Patients get great health care and medications at no cost, and George gets paid to do what she loves. In addition, physicians learn about soon-to-be-released new medications and their potential benefits and risks.

In the 18 years since Wasatch Clinical Research in Salt Lake City was created, the FDA has approved numerous new medications it has helped test. The company continues to grow by 10 percent every year.
