Singing the Praises of Frugal Summer Fun

These 10 great ideas will fill the long summer days with plenty of fun that won’t break the bank.

There are lots of great reasons to sing the praises of summer. Seals & Crofts paid tribute to the sweet days of summer in their hit, “Summer Breeze.” Warm weather, longer days, and flexible, blissfully school-free schedules leave plenty of time to enjoy our favorite activities.

But while Hollywood blockbusters, concerts and vacations all contribute to summer fun, they also come with a price tag. It’s great to balance fun-with-a-fee with some fun that is free — or frugally priced.

Put some of these low-cost activities on your summer playlist:

“These Boots Are Made for Walking” by Nancy Sinatra

Take a hike! There are fewer activities that are better for your mental and physical health than hiking. Our local communities in Idaho and Utah have miles of great trails to explore.

“Bicycle Race” by Queen

Go bike riding! Some people like this more than hiking since it can be cooler and you get to cover more ground. Add your favorite music list to accompany you and you are all set

“Saturday in the Park” by Chicago

Go to the park! Check with your city for special activities to make your trip to the park even better.

“Stoned Soul Picnic” by The 5th Dimension

Make it a picnic! Rather than going out for another restaurant meal, turn it into a picnic that will save you money and give you a view worth sharing on social media.

“Cheeseburger in Paradise” by Jimmy Buffett

Have a barbeque! Maybe you can’t get away for a picnic. You still have to eat, though, so cook outside in the backyard or balcony for a change of pace.

“Treasure” by Bruno Mars

Do a scavenger hunt! This one takes a little work, but it can be a lot of fun. People will be talking about it for a long time after.

“Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Water fight! What better way to cool off on a hot day than with a friendly water fight? Whether your choice of attack is water balloons, super soaker, or the good ol’ garden hose, a clean water fight is bound to leave everyone smiling and refreshed.

“Castles in the Air” by Don McLean

Build a castle! Drop by an appliance store and they are more than happy to let you take home a bunch of appliance boxes. Add some duct tape, a box cutter and your imagination and you have all you need to make the castle of your dreams. It will keep the kids busy for hours — if not days.

“A Sky Full of Stars” by Coldplay

Go stargazing! The night weather will never be warmer than the summer time and with stargazing mobile apps, stargazing has never been more accessible and easy.

"Flashlight" by Jessie J

Play flashlight tag! Sometimes overcast skies can ruin stargazing plans, but that just makes it even better to play flashlight tag.

Go play!
