Cache Valley manufacturer named U.S. Small Business Administration 2014 Small Business Exporter of the Year for Utah

From the humid climate of Cadereyta, Mexico, to the extreme dry heat of the Algerian Sahara Desert, Cache County, Utah-based compressor manufacturer Hycomp is successfully expanding into international markets.

This success growing overseas has earned Hycomp the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2014 Small Business Exporter of the Year Award for Utah.

A rich history

The company was founded in 1969 by William James. He began producing oil-free air compressors under the trade name Aeroflow Industries. Oil-free gas compressors were added to Aeroflow’s product line in 1977, two years before the company was chosen to build four units for the Susquehanna Nuclear Power Station. Characteristically, the compressors Hycomp provided over 30 years ago are still in operation today.

The advent of the discounted oil-less compressor line by competitors led to the sale of Aeroflow Industries in 1990 to an inside investor. Hycomp was bought back by its founder’s son, Robert James, in 1997.

Expanding into the next generation

Owner Robert James has driven the company’s expansion into new product lines.
Sensing a dramatic shift in the market, Robert immediately expanded the company to include the production of air boosters. Hycomp then teamed with several U.S. and international manufacturers of on-site nitrogen generation systems, and began a hard push back into nitrogen compressors as well. Hycomp flourishes in a market segment that requires oil-free and high quality compression from 0-3,000 psig standard. Most larger companies do not even make a product offering in this corner of the market.

In 2004, Hycomp moved to Hyde Park, Utah. The company has grown from three employees in 1997 to 55 employees. Hycomp has ranked among Inc. magazine’s “Inc. 500|5000: America’s Fastest Growing Private Companies.” It continues to grow through solid engineering, industry-specific market research and by building strong relationships of trust with their distributors and end-users. Among its large clients are companies such as Pratt & Whitney, Nestle, Astra Zeneca, Petrofac, Pfizer, PEMEX, Air Liquide, Nucor Steel, Dow Chemical, Kimberly Clark, Merck Pharmaceutical, British Petroleum, and many others.

Exports fuel growth

A major contributor to Hycomp’s growth in recent years has been exports to the international market. Hycomp has expanded its worldwide presence to 30 countries, and its compressors are on every continent except Antarctica.

Hycomp’s export business centers on providing large solutions specifically engineered for their application and environment. This requires extensive design, engineering, documentation and packaging arrangements. For example, in the Algerian Sahara Desert, Hycomp supplied a nitrogen gas compressor system that was used for fire suppression for the El Merk oil Central Processing Facility.

Industry experts project air and gas compressor exports to increase 8.9% annually over the next five years, but Hycomp has been exceeding this trend and is prepared to meet international demand.
